Netflix Envelope

One more nail was hammered into the HD DVD coffin when Netflix announced they would be “phasing out HD DVD rentals from its service due to underwhelming demand.” The company currently has more than 400 titles on Blu-ray and over 90,000 on standard DVD. Netflix, which has suffered setbacks in recent months, has more than 7 million subscribers and also has 7,000 titles available through its online streaming service, compared to the 1,000 available through the iTune’s store.

The company cited bringing “clarity to the consumer” and to “accelerate the adoption of high-def” for it’s decision in dropping the failing medium. Currently on Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal Studios publish discs in the HD-DVD format.
