Just because you have the ability to play doesn’t necessarily mean you get to. That is the case with iTunes new video rental system and a seemingly random selection of video iPods.

Apple has confirmed that movie rentals only work with the iPhone, iPod touch, iPod classic and the third-generation nano. Anything earlier and you can forget about it, and fifth-generation iPods sold before September 2007 are simply incompatible with rented videos. Wired had this explanation for the skip in generations:

“For now, the most likely suspect has to do with what some have deemed the “analog hole” present in 5-G iPods. Previous generation iPods have an analog video output that works with standard video cables. As some have observed, this theoretically makes it easier to copy rented movies, by plugging the iPod into a camcorder or other video-recording device.

It looks like a fix is not going to be available and the only solution will be to upgrade to a new device, or go back a generation.
