The Hollywood Reporter has an article about Robert Iger’s view of the future and how technology affects media companies like the Walt Disney Co. The article really only proves why Iger is the best choice to be at the head of Disney. If more industry CEO’s were so optimistic about what technology can do to enhance operations rather than fear it we might have solutions to the many copyright protection issues the industry is facing. He puts it very plainly stating “that the future is more of a threat than an opportunity” to most in the industry. I suppose it comes from having Steve Jobs as your biggest shareholder. I probably would embrace technology as much as possible if I was in bed with the most innovative company in the tech world.
Iger has consistently brought Disney to the forefront of technology, utilizing every available tool to maximize the availability of Disney content. They were the first to offer tv shows streamed online, first to offer new and old movies on iTunes, first to have a cable program produce hiring ratings than anything else on network television for that time (High School Musical 2), and it is because of Iger’s optimism and forward thinking that the Disney brand will continue to live on in difficult time for content producers.
Not only that but where else will you find a CEO say “we don’t really want to put a Disney movie on a digital platform on the same page as ‘Best Breasts on the Web.” How’s that for matching content with the proper forms of technology.
