DreamWorks Animation

Like a fine wine this story has gotten better with age. Undisclosed sources cited today claim that the reason Paramount and DreamWorks Animation have dropped support of Blu-Ray is a large chunk of change. $50mil will go to Par and a sizeable $100mil to convince Katzenberg at DWA.

The only one not convinced is Steven Spielberg whose clout in the industry has allowed him to continue supporting both formats as he remains a “big supporter of Blu-ray.”  As it turns out many directors in the industry prefer Blu-Ray due to its larger disc capacity. With an advantage of almost 3.5 hours Blu-Ray allows for epics like ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Titanic’ to come on one disc and no director wants their films broken up by the changing of dvd’s halfway through the movie.

There is more to the story, but it falls under the gossip category in my mind so I will simply point you to it via Variety or The Hollywood Reporter.

The hype just keeps going. Last Friday Disney announced its upcoming lineup of Blu-Ray discs, including the first classic animated feature on the format, and the announcement might have gone out under the radar but Fox announced its upcoming lineup of 29 exclusive titles. I suppose it’s good to have Rupert Murdoch on your side in this case as he seems to get whatever he wants and if Fox supports Blu-Ray he won’t lose the battle without a fight.
