Everyone wants to be in the mobile biz these days.  Google has been dumping funding into mobile for quite awhile now.  But it’s unclear if they’re just doing this to create apps on existing handset manufacturers’ devices–and hence capture an emerging market for ad revenue–or if they will one day roll out their own gPhone.  They already have a number of apps available for a number of different mobile platforms, so it’s not out of the question for them to roll out their own branded device like Apple did with the iPhone.  However they’ve talked about the Google OS for quite some time and that hasn’t materialized yet, so we’ll see.

What we won’t see next week however is any new iPod or iPhone announcements at a special event held on Apple’s Cupertino campus.  Despite all the buzz around the iPhone, and the subsequent ridiculous swings in the stock, the focus on the 8/7 event will supposedly be on Macs.  Seems like there is going to be a new and improved version of the iMac to be rolled out–slimmer, sleeker, and featuring a thin new MacBook-like keyboard.  It doesn’t seem like there will be a complete redesign of the line such as from the flat-panel iMac to the current G5 line.  But hopefully there will be some slick new features.  And I’m waiting for a redesign of the MacBook Pro line which I’m guessing will be September or October–at least I’m holding out until they make a major revision before I get a new one to replace my aging Aluminum 15″ PB.  Not that there’s anything wrong with it, but you know…new is better?
